Whether you have a piano teacher or you are learning from a book or electronic media, the first thing to learn are the names of the notes. And to learn every note, you need to have a piano or a keyboard. You can't learn how to read piano notes by only imagining a keyboard. You need to be able to identify each key with the sound it produces. This makes learning how to read piano music much easier and faster.

You should also learn to visualize the keyboard and learn the exact location of the notes. The keyboard's map is known as theGrand Staff and you can read it easily if you learn all the notes. Being able to identify piano notes is the beginning in understanding how to read sheet music for piano.

For instance, when learning how to read piano notes you begin by learning the seven tab notes. This is the C-major scale with the notes being CDEFGAB. As you progress, you will learn about the other scales and their associative notes. You will need to memorize all the notes on the keyboard to effectively play the piano. After you've learned the more simple notes, you'll move on to the more difficult notes. Remember, keep practicing the notes that you have already learned because you will be using them when playing more advanced notes.

If you simply want to learn how to read piano notes and play the simplest piano music, all you have to know is at least two keys for each scale. The notes on the C major scale include C, E, and G. You can easily play these notes together to create the simplest piano music. But if you want to be able to play more advanced piano music, memorize all the notes by heart. Soon, you can play the piano like the experts.

So you see, learning piano notes is not a game. It is a difficult process especially if you have memorization problems. Practice picturing a keyboard inside your mind and indentifying each note. Repeat this each day for a couple of minutes. Continue this until you've memorized the last key note. Keep the piano image inside your mind because this will be of very good use to you in the future.

If possible, begin learning how to read piano notes at an early stage.....as soon as you start your piano lessons. This way, you can learn the chords much easier. Playing the piano is fun but you have to have patience.
