Light is a subtle element, unlike more solid pieces such as couches and vases, illumination is an aspect of decorating which is difficult to define or control. It is ethereal; its hazy gaze rests over the nature of the space, casting light in one direction, and shadow in another. It is the energy of the space, the backdrop that defines in a very potent way the essence of the environment.
One of the most confounding factors when trying to control lighting in a decorative situation is the presence, or lack thereof, of the sun. Sunlight is the most powerful illumination in the world, and yet it is constantly changing. The angle of the sun moves across the sky, and there are certain parts of the day when one room is full of light, and others when its cast in shadow.
The most basic truth about illuminated decorating is that the more options you have the more control you will have. A room with just one big overhead light may be bright, but you only have two options in such a space, reading bright and total darkness. By contrast a space that is filled with a variety of lamps, and disparate lighting sources, allows you to gradually grade the space up from a single dim fixture, to a full all out glow fest.
With ambient light, it is possible to direct the focus of a space, casting some areas in shadow, and accenting others. This allows you to hide certain features that may not be your favorite part of the space. By contrast you can also accentuate attractive works of art or decorative pieces, putting them in the literal spotlight, and using them as focal points in the environment.
Ambient lighting is also a way to dramatically alter the mood of a room. Being able to turn the main lights down and just let a few soft orbs illuminate the space, can relax the feel of the room, giving it a quiet, intimate feeling.
Ambient lighting is a powerful way to change the nature of the space. Even though the hazy glow of illuminated shadows can seem difficult to master at first, it is quite possible to use layers and lights to achieve the atmosphere that you are trying for.
