When a wedding day comes along there are all kinds of special garments and accessories worn by the members of the bridal party and even the guests in attendance. For one thing, most women will want to wear their favorite jewelry and dresses, and some will even acquire special shoes, gloves, or hats as well.

When a flower girl is made ready for a wedding day she should receive the same kind of attention and wide range of accessories as any other member of the party. In fact, most brides will actually give a flower girl a bit more thought and advanced planning.

For instance, it is not unusual for a bride to purchase a gown for her flower girl that is somewhat unique from the rest of the party, and she will also usually take the child with her to get a pair of fancy or "dress" shoes, a head piece or veil, and even such extras as gloves, crinolines or slips, jewelry, and a shawl or "wrap".

Historically, a flower girl was meant to be a sort of mirror reflection of the bride. This is the very reason that so many flower girl dresses are designed to look like miniature bridal gowns. Time, however, does change things and the modern trends are for less formal gowns for a little girl, and often call for an extra dose of whimsy to be incorporated into the flower girl’s gown too.

Consider the many colorful and fairy-tale styled gowns made for children in a wedding party. Some of these dresses feature skirts entirely made of tulle (the same fabric used in ballerina tutus) and there are even some with loads of silk flowers and sequins too.

Many brides also consider the frugality of the purchase as well. Instead of demanding that a flower girl wear a gown that can only be used the single time they will opt for a simpler design that is easily "dressed up" with a sash or ribbons, and which can be worn at a variety of occasions after the wedding day has come and gone.

One thing to remember, if you are planning a wedding, is that it is vitally important to allow a child the opportunity to give an opinion or make some choices. For instance, when purchasing shoes for the bridal party it is a good idea to ask the flower girl if she wants plain ballet slippers or fancier ones with flowers and ribbons.
