Digg is a social news site that allows you to post and share content on the web. Digg is the most popular social bookmarking site. It is ranked at 100 position in the Alexa ranking. Because it is so successful, many people also decide to create a social bookmarking site that has voting system like Digg. The digg voting systems allows users vote the stories up and down. The stories that has the highest vote will be displayed on the front page of Digg.

Digg was founded in 2004 by four persons including Kevin Rose, Owen Byrne, Ron Gorodetzky and Jay Adelson. Owen Byrne is responsible for managing and developing the site. Initially, David Prager wanted to give the site the name Dignation. However, Kevin Rose rejected the idea.

He told him he prefer something that is easier to remember such as Dig. Kevin chose this name because users will have to dig out the stories out of the thousands of stories submitted when voting. Diggnation is used as the headline of the podcast that are broadcast to the public every week. Since it was launched, it had become more and more popular each day.

At first, Digg did not have any advertisement on their site. The template of the Digg site was created by Dan Rise. When Digg receives a higher traffic volume, the Digg team added Google Adsense. A number of features are also added. The new features that are added include friend list and new interface. Users will also not be redirected to the success page after the story is submitted.

Digg offers a large range of topic include Techology, World & Business, Lifestyle, Sports and Offbeat. You can submit content, video of image to Digg. Before you are redirected to the submit page, the system will perform a check on the URL to detect any duplication.

Digg is known for its ability to get a site indexed quickly. To help your site to get indexed, make sure it has at least 3 pages of content. Though Digg allows you to submit as many URL as you want, it is recommended that you submit only 2 – 3 URLs per day. If you submit too many URLs from the same site, other users will notice and report you to the moderator. Besides promoting your site, you can also post other interesting content. If you keep promoting your site, the users on Digg will find your account suspicious. By social bookmarking other sites, you will convinced people that you do not have an intention of self promotion.

Before you can submit to Digg, you must have an account. After registering for an account, you should setup the profile page. To upload a profile picture, go to Profile > Settings. Under the settings tab, click on the Change icon on the right side of the page. To access the profile page, click on the About me under the Options. After updating the profile, you can start to submit your URLs to Digg.
