If you are interested in raising chickens that will lay eggs or are even interested in a home-based small poultry, let be assured that this is a very rewarding hobby. Not only the anticipation of a well-nurtured hen’s egg laying very exciting but also is no less than a ceremony for those who are totally into it.
Not all breeds are good for laying eggs or for meat production. To optimize the growth and egg production capacity, there are several breeds of birds. Selection of the bird breed is a personal choice depending on the benefit you want to get. If you thought that raising chickens in your backyard was just for the sake of eggs or meat, think again -Because this is an environment-friendly way to control and check the growth of insects and weeds.
Selection Criteria based on Location
Believe it or not, there are hundreds of options of different breeds available for raising them. They vary from country to country and region to region. Select the best breed depending on your geographical location and the average weather type and temperature than your region faces. If you live in a too hot place, raising hens can be a painstaking task especially with all the cooling and humidity control that you need to provide.
Different breeds of chickens are broadly classified on to their usage. They are the layer, meat or ornament type.
Breed for Eggs
The egg laying chickens are more commonly known as hens and are the females of the group. They are a little on the heavier side and need a nutritious diet for optimal production of eggs. For example, after mating with a single cockerel, a hen may lay up to 13-15 eggs. Though cross-breeding may take place, it is not advisable due to the genetic complications it may give rise to.
The best breeds of hens for eggs are the Jaerhone, Ancona, Easter Egger, Araucana, Andalusian and Ameraucana. Amongst them, the Jaerhone eats more and lays bigger eggs. All of them are light weight and have a quiet temperament.
Breed as Pets and Other Uses
Poultry breed that is most suitable for meat production is generally that serves a dual purpose of egg laying and meat production. The best breeds are the Indian Game and Ixworth. The breeds of Astralorp, Braekel and Chanticleer also serve this dual purpose well. Breeds that are used as pets are mainly the male roosters or cockerels.
