Granite countertops have become a favorite in kitchens and bathrooms. They come in a variety of colors and textures with no two slabs being identical, making them unique. They are durable, adding value to homes and when properly maintained, provide a lifetime of beauty.
Granite is a natural stone made from molten rock that comes from Brazil, China and India. The stone is also found in the southern United States. Southern quarries in Georgia and North Carolina supply some of the most popular granite in the world. People in the south prefer this stone, as it connects their countertops to the region.
Proper maintenance and cleaning is the key to keeping the countertop lustrous and beautiful. Standard cleaning is done by wiping it down weekly with a damp cloth and a stone cleaner. Avoid acidic cleansers, which may stain the countertop. Also, avoid soft powder or cream cleansers and cleansers with ammonia which can dull the surface. Below are special cleaning procedures for the removal of different stains.
Deep set grime and grit
Poultice cleaning is a procedure for the removal of deep set grime. Commercial poultices can be found where granite products are sold. This paste is the consistency of oatmeal. First, the surface is moistened with a liquid base, such as a 6% solution of hydrogen peroxide or laundry bleach The paste is then applied to the granite surface ½" thick. Plastic sheeting is placed over the poultice area and remains for 48 hours. The poultice is then dampened with clean water to soften it and removed with a plastic spatula. The area is cleansed and blotted with clean water and the surface is allowed to dry. If some grime remains embedded, a second application may be necessary.
Grease stains
Wash the granite surface with hot water and a mild soap to help loosen the oil stains, which will disappear in a few days.
Acidic stains
Stains from foods such as lemons or fruits, vinegar and wine spills will often disappear if caught early and blotted. The surface should be washed with clean water and if the stain has set in, a poultice can be applied.
Scratches and dents
With proper care, granite countertops should not scratch or become dented. However, if this should occur it is best to consult a professional for repairs or replacement.
Granite should be sealed annually using specially made sealants to prevent cloudiness and create luster. Although the stone is very durable, care should be made not to abuse it or resealing will need to be applied more often. Granite countertops have become very popular today and with proper care and maintenance, its natural beauty is sure to be the focal point of any room it adorns.
