Code Brown! When Drain Pipes Clog
"It is the most horrible thing you've ever seen in your life," said Marilyn James. She'd a short time ago gone to live in the Worcester region, and was getting her spouse and children settled in their new household when the difficulty started. "After my child finished using the lavatory, she flushed the commode but the water didn't go lower, without doubt! Let's just say it was NOT the sort of mess you want. The kids screaming about how grossed out they were was not helping the situation, and neither was anything I was doing with the plunger!"
A backed up toilet, clogged sink or slower draining tub may send you running for the plunger, but the reality is that a plunger can't fix everything for you. When the plunger doesn't perform, many property owners turn to the harsh chemical drain cleaners that are available at grocery or discount retailers. They can succeed, but if they will not, it may be time to call up your Worcester plumber. Attempting to deal with a clog on your own requires a certain amount of knowledge, including identifying what the material blocking your pipes is and what is the best way to handle it.
How do you know what's clogging your pipes? Look at the area, and think about what items - apart from water - are going down the drain. With the food prep, grease is the most common problem. When grease is warm, it's a liquid, and it slips easily down the drain. However, once it cools off, grease solidifies. This blocks your pipes, rendering it extremely hard for water to get by. The old home cure of pouring hot water down the drain to clear the clog could work - but only for a time, as all one does is shifting the grease further down the pipe, where it's going to once again cool and solidify.
Clogged pipes within the restroom are yet another matter. Bathtub and sink clogs can be due to hair, soap, and shaving cream. The toiletries we use each and every day contain a lot of oil and fat, which can act much the same way as grease does in the kitchen. When we turn our attention to a clogged toilet, the picture becomes a little bit more complicated. Things get flushed away that were never meant to - from diapers and feminine hygiene items to whatever an adventurous toddler can get their hands on.
How do you fix this on your own? Start with the plunger: suction can work miracles, in the right time and the right place. Dislodging the clog can allow it to continue to its final destination or return it to you, where you can dispose of it. Chemical drain cleaners work, although they are rather toxic and many homeowners prefer not to keep them in the house. Forget about the old wives' tale of using hot water for drain cleaning: it may move a grease clog temporarily, but will not fix the problem.
Make life easy for yourself and call your Worcester pluming company for clogs you can't fix with a plunger or chemical drain cleaner. They have the tools and experience to tackle many different kinds of clogged pipes: drain cleaning is what they do on a daily basis. They have the tools that are powerful enough to dislodge any clog, without damaging your home or making a big mess. The home handyman can't say that: most of the tools available to the do it yourselfer are just plain inadequate, not to mention difficult to use and messy.
Prevention can be more than half the battle. Preventative drain cleaning is a service your Worcester plumber will happily perform, generally at a fraction of the cost of an emergency service call. Consider adding regular drain cleaning to the routine of chores you have done on an annual basis as part of caring for your home and protecting the investment you've made in it. There's no fuss, no mess, and you get the peace of mind of knowing that every time you flush the toilet, everything will go where it's supposed to!
