Your car is one of your most precious investments in life, a convenience that you’ve surely worked hard for. However, it is also one of the things you own that can be easily taken from you if you don’t take extra caution. If car thieves can’t do the job, then other accidents and unfortunate events might part you from your vehicle, so it’s important to always be alert and ready. Here are some useful things to remember in order to avoid car theft and other vehicle mishaps.
-
Always lock up your car. This may sound like a no-brainer but it is quite surprising that a lot of car owners are actually guilty of breaking this simplest rule. Whether you just need to quickly grab something that you forgot inside the house, or pop into the garage to pay for the gas, the moment that you leave your car unattended is a great window of opportunity for determined car thieves. Make sure that every time you walk away from your vehicle, it is completely locked and all the windows are secure. Never leave the keys in the ignition because this is like an open invitation for criminals to smash the window and drive away with your car. It is always best to set your car alarm to deter would-be car stealers.
-
Park wisely. Choose areas that are well-lit and have a sufficient traffic of people who can easily witness if anyone tried to break into your vehicle. The best place to leave your car is still in a manned car park, even if you might need to pay extra for it.
-
Do not display valuables inside your car. Just like a car key dangling from the ignition, other items of value that can be glimpsed from outside your vehicle will entice criminals to break in and help themselves with your belongings. Make sure that your mobile phone or laptop is not sitting proudly on your car seat before you leave, because your car might still be there when you return, but the windows may not be intact anymore.
-
Entrust a spare key to a friend in case of emergency. Situations may arise when you are not present and your car needs to be moved, such as for snow plowing or to avoid being towed. A friend or neighbor who has a spare key to your car would surely come in handy on these occasions.
-
Safeguard your ride against car fires. Most vehicle fires are attributed to poor maintenance. You don’t want your beloved car to go up in flames, or worse be toasted inside it in the process, so have it routinely checked for engine hose leaks, damaged fuel lines, and worn electrical wiring. Don’t hesitate to go to your mechanic if hear your car making suspicious noises. When on the road, follow road safety guidelines and speed limits to avoid accidents that may lead to combustion.
Prioritizing your vehicle’s security actually amounts to putting great importance to your own security as well. Give your car some extra love and care and it will surely come back to you.
