Finding a wedding photographer doesn't have to be difficult or stressful especially if you educate yourself ahead of time. A good wedding photographer is one of the most important elements of your wedding. You've put so much time, effort, and money into your special day and you want to hire someone who can take all the right pictures to preserve your memories.

The first step to finding a wedding photographer is to ask around for referrals. Do you know anyone who has been married recently? Ask around and see which names come up the most. Also do a search on the internet. Searching online for wedding photographers in your area is a great way to see who is out there. Most photographers will have some of their pictures posted on their website. This gives you a chance to look at their work right away and see if you like their style. Some will also have an "about me" page on their website where you can find out exactly where they are located and read about their education and experience.

Once you have a list of names you're interested in, either from referrals or from your internet search, it's time to give them a call and do a short phone interview. You might think this is unnecessary, especially if you've read their "about me" page from their website. Do not skip this step. This enables you to have a one on one talk with the photographer and find out if your personalities match. You don't want to hire someone you don't get along with. Photographers are people too and they come with a wide variety of personalities just like everyone else does. While you're talking to them keep these questions in mind:

  • Are they really listening to me?

  • Do they understand what I want?

  • Are they friendly, yet professional?

During your phone interview it's important to ask the photographer the following questions:

  • Are you available on the day I want?

  • Will you be coming out to take the photos or are you sending someone else from your company?

  • What are your package deals?

  • What is your style of photography (Traditional, Photojournalism, Illustrative, etc)?

If the photographer is from the list of referrals from your friends and family, ask the photographer for a time when you can come into the office and look through his/her photographs. If you ever get an uneasy feeling or you just don't feel like this is the right photographer for you then just move on. You need to trust those feelings even if you don't quite understand them. It's better to listen to your inner voice now then to be disappointed in your photos later.

There are many talented and gifted photographers out there. Find one in your area that you like, you get along with, and you trust. By doing a little bit of homework ahead of time you can help to ensure that your special day goes smoothly and you will have the beautiful photos to preserve all of your wonderful memories.
