The vintage look is here to stay, and it has never looked better than it does on handbags today. Vintage handbags come in a range. There are some that are not old; they’re new, just made to have the old look. Then there’s the real thing; old bags from back when cuts were cleaner and accessories were really cool, that have been preserved over the years and are now refurbished or renovated and ready for another long life. As you probably already know, you need to have special kind of taste to go for vintage.
Vintage handbags come in many varieties and styles, and choosing can be just as hard as choosing any other bag for your wardrobe. Make sure that you choose a bag that complements as many outfits in your wardrobe as possible, and think about how well your bag or bags will match your shoes and belts too.
Vintage bags are special because of their finishing. Although made from very simple cuts and styles, many will come finished with beads or flowers that make them stand out. Today, you can get a bag that has been borrowed from as far back as 1920, but more common is from 1950.
Vintage handbags have a rustic look most of the time and they come in darker colors, an important consideration when buying. You can use them to quiet down a particularly loud outfit, or to keep a subtle one just that – subtle. The best way to wear a vintage handbag is casual; since they come with decorations, they can look a bit awkward on a formal outfit.
What are some of the things you should keep your eye on when shopping for vintage handbags?
The best advice is to go for designer vintage bags. It’s the only way to know without a doubt that you’re getting the best. Look out for the following quality markers:
-
Check the seams. There is nothing like a bag whose seams give way in a few days because they’ve been done poorly. You’ll know by the cut and the stitching. It should be even and neat.
-
Check the quality of the fabric that’s been used for the lining. There are many bags that look good on the outside but are terrible on the inside; the lining rips after a few uses. Make sure that the lining is made of sturdy fabric and that it’s been cut and sewn well.
-
Clasps in vintage handbags can be tricky. There are some that don’t hold very well. In trying to reproduce the original bag, some bag makers will not get the clasp just right. You want your bag to be able to close at all times so make sure that it holds well. If it’s a magnetic clasp, make sure that the magnet holds firm.
-
Everything that’s designer has a fake circulating somewhere in the market. You don’t want to end up with a collection of fake vintage handbags. Buy from an authorized and trusted vendor. This is also helpful in case you have to make a return.
