Grants for college education are a great way to fund the growing costs of higher education. With constantly increasing college fees, a quality college education appears inaccessible to the common people. Paying $ 20,000 each annually for four years as college fees in a private college can be afforded only by the rich. Majority of the students require at least a little financial assistance to pay their college fees.
Student loans have to be repaid, but grants for college education are donations that are not needed to be repaid. Both scholarships and grants are free aids, but while scholarships are presented to meritorious students, grants are mainly given to needy students. A grant is given only after inspecting the student’s background particulars, place of origin, financial condition, chosen subject, academic records and areas of interests. Different institutions, like the national and provincial governments and corporate organizations and business firms, pass out grants for higher education. Financial help in some form or the other is offered to needy students to present them an opportunity to study in the best colleges.
Every Year, the national government releases billions of dollars in loans and grants for college students. Cheques for the free money for schooling are not sent straight to the student’s home. The money presented as grants is sent directly to the student’s college to forbid fraud.
Post graduate and undergraduate students from lower income groups can only avail the Federal Pell Grant. The amount distributed as grants for college students changes each year with modifications in the budget and policies of the national government. Financial aid is given out taking into consideration the expected family contribution (EFC) and also the total study expenses of the student.
Financial help is presented by the FSEOG to students with the highest need only. The FSEOG program helps students from very weak economic background with a minimum EFC.
Undergraduate freshmen and sophomores from financially weaker backgrounds but with excellent academic records are eligible for the AC grant, as long as they are eligible for the Pell grant.
Montgomery G.I. Bill: This bill provides financial help to students who have served the armed forces.
Government sponsored grants for college education are presented to students who have filed for Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). State governments also give out grants separately to needy students in addition to the ones offered by the national government. Students from abroad can avail several other funds. Apart from the government, private establishments, colleges and universities also hand out free money for school.
