Roof renovations are a great way to reduce your heating and cooling cost and add value to your house. These are all great whether you are looking to sell your home now or possibly in the future. Some roof renovations can be done by the average do-it-yourselfer and others will require a professional to do them.
Some of the steeper roofs will require a professional to do the roof renovations while those roofs with a smaller or no incline can be done by a do-it-yourselfer. Once you have figured out whether or not you will be doing your roof yourself, it is time to decide on the material you want to use on your rooftop. Some homeowners like to go with the overall scheme of their neighborhood to keep a sequenced look. However, you can go with the material that suits your needs or taste the best.
When figuring out which type of roofing shingles to go with you should consider the color you are looking for, the price range as well as the material. There are several types of shingles, some that are popular because they are inexpensive and others because they are natural. You have to know what you want and then proceed.
When you are preparing yourself to make the renovations you should gather or make a list of items to buy to make this renovation as painless as possible. Here is a list of what you will need.
-
ladder
-
tape measure
-
knife
-
pry bar
-
hammer
The first thing you need to do is get rid of the old. Everything that is damaged or looking less than perfect can be removed at this time. However, if you are redoing your roof completely it can all go. More than likely you are going to have to strip your roof off completely, this means take off the shingles, tar paper or plywood.
Now you are ready to begin giving your roof a new updated look. Begin replacing all of the plywood that you removed from the roof. You should be using plywood sheets that have newly been purchased. To do this you will need eight penny sized nails.
Now you need to replace the tar paper by covering the old with the new. Now you can begin shingling. Copy the pattern of the old shingles if they are still available. In about 2 hours or so, depending on the size of your roof, your roof renovations will be complete.
