Many people just throw away a rechargeable battery when it seems that it doesn't work well anymore. Over time and with repeated charging a batteries performance will decline. There are many different techniques you can employ to restore batteries to a like new state, and almost all modern rechargeable batteries can be reconditioned. The great thing is you can pick up batteries that you can work your magic on for free. A short test on these free batteries will tell you if it is worth proceeding with the process, or whether you should just dispose of them. In the majority of cases it will prove worthwhile to recondition them.
Processes are many and varied, ranging from simply freezing them in a freezer before recharging, to using devices which can be purchase from specialist sites. Any equipment you buy will pay for itself with the first few uses or sometimes you can make the devices for yourself.
Most reconditioning processes will require a battery to be fully discharged. Surprisingly even when the battery will no longer power the device that it is being used on it will still retain some residual charge. This vastly reduces any reconditioning processes effectiveness. This full discharging is done by shorting out he terminals with a resistive circuit that allows all the charge to dissipate safely.
