Boston Massachusetts was last affected by Hurricane Edouard in 1991 as the state is typically immune to the Atlantic hurricane season. This year with the change in wind currents residents in the Boston area could have a bit more to deal with as hurricanes have been traveling along the east coast with more consistency. While not located in an area directly affected by hurricanes, Boston has had its fair share of hurricanes over the past 100 years. This type of tropical depression can drop several inches of rain and create substantial damages for Massachusetts property owners.
If you live in the Boston Massachusetts area and are concerned that your home or business is vulnerable to storm or flood damage, then the chances are good that it is. Therefore you should take the time to prepare yourself and your property against the devastation that a flood can cause. Some of the things that you can do now is to come up with an emergency plan and put together an emergency kit. You should also consider buying flood insurance now as it takes 30 days for a policy to take affect once purchased. You should also buy an inexpensive transistor or NOAA weather radio with batteries in case the power goes out during a storm. If severe weather is predicted for your area, be sure to monitor the area news for information regarding the weather. Keep an ear open for any alerts posted concerning evacuation routes and monitor local road conditions. Be prepared to evacuate if the need arises and plan for relocating pets.
Inside your home or business you can store your valuables such as electronics, important papers and clothing on shelves or higher ground. Keep hazardous chemicals off of floor level and ensure that underground tanks are sealed properly and secured. Know where you can pick up sandbags and sand in your area and learn how to place them on your property for fighting flood water. Take the time to clear storm drains of leaves and debris and know who to call if flooding leads to sewer overflows.
Being prepared for the possibility of flooding in Boston is a wise thing to do. Taking the time now to access your damage risks and looking at your property's vulnerability is a sound step that should provide you with the peace of mind knowing you have done all you can when and if your home becomes flooded.
Should your property become flood damaged due to a hurricane it is important that you begin the cleanup process immediately. Cleaning and repairing properties from water damage will help to minimize any structural damages as well as reduce the possibility of mold growth. Professional restoration firms will use high tech water extraction and drying equipment to remove and dry a property. The drying and cleaning process generally will last between 24-72 hours depending on the size of the building and the degree of water damage. Hurricanes historically are known to cause some of the worst flood damage disasters due to their high winds and heavy rainfall.
