There are many people who will debate whether the moderately higher cost of spray foam insulation is really worthwhile. At first glance, you may compare the costs of fiberglass batting and other forms of insulation. Because spray foam is initially more expensive, you may doubt that is it your more economical insulation option. However, as will most things, the economic value of a product does not only relate to the initial purchase price of the item. You need to look at the long-term benefits of using the product to evaluate if it is the option that will give you the very best value. In order to do this, let’s look at a few of the pros and cons of spray foam insulation as compared with other forms of insulation.
Initial Purchase Price and What You Get
There are many different brands and types of spray foam insulation available. For the purposes of this study, let’s consider that you will be installing the spray foam yourself as a DIY project and not using an independent contractor to do it for you. Spray foam can be purchased in the form of a kit from wholesalers and retailers in your area. Some manufacturing companies also offer the option to purchase directly from them online. Going the direct sales route to the manufacturer means that you can be sure of getting the best possible price as there is no retail mark-up on the product. Buying a kit is the most economical option. You get the two spray foam chemicals which are stored in two tanks pressurized with nitrogen. You also get the hoses, spray gun and nozzles needed to facilitate the application of the spray foam. The kits are easy to transport and store, and unused have a shelf life of up to 13 months. Once opened, you can still use the kits for up to 30 days. If you use other forms of insulation such as fiberglass batting, the initial purchase price will be somewhat cheaper. However, the rolls of batting are bulky which makes them difficult to transport and store. Once purchased, you will need to install them as soon as possible.
Economic Efficiency in Terms of Installation Time and Effort
Installing fiberglass batting can be a challenging process. Because the batting comes in a set size, you first need to measure the area being insulated and cut the batting to size. You then need to make sure that the batting fits accurately so there are no gaps in the insulation. If you measure wrong and the batting is too small, you may waste some of your materials. The process can also be time consuming; f you lead a busy lifestyle, this can translate into being an expensive exercise. When installing spray foam, the only preparation you need to do on the area is to make sure that it is clean and dry. Then you simply spray the foam as instructed onto the area that you insulate. If after an application you find that you have missed a spot, you can simply spray some more foam onto that area. The spray foam hardens to the touch within 30 seconds and within an hour is completely set. This means that the insulation application can be completed within a few hours. It is therefore a project that can easily be undertaken on a Saturday afternoon. It is quick, efficient and optimizes the resources you are using. When put into an economic perspective, you can see it already has an added value.
The Long-term Economic Efficiency of Spray Foam
If you are still not convinced of the economic efficiency of spray foam, perhaps the next argument will sway you. When looking at the long-term benefits of spray foam insulation, there are few other types of insulation that compare favorably. Because spray foam forms an airtight seal, it traps the warm air inside your home and keeps the cold air out. This means that you reduce the amount you are spending on heating in your home quite dramatically. Most homeowners discover that they have recouped the cost of the spray foam insulation within a few months just by the savings they receive on their utility bills. In addition, spray foam is more durable. This means that it lasts up to two or three times longer than other forms of insulation. This means that after installing spray foam insulation, you will not need to repeat the process for a long time. This on its own keeps more dollars in your pocket.
