No doubt there are similarities, for instance, the rhyme, the message in the wordings and they are broken up in paragraphs (for songs it is called a verse, while for poems it is a stanza). It is true many song lyrics are similar to poems, but they do not have to be.

The important thing is your song ideas and the lyrics have got to be memorable. In other words, you have to come out with a catchy song title or an interesting music idea. They have to evoked imagination, emotion, or memory. The careful selection of words is crucial. So don't merely stuff in words just to make it rhyme. The musical idea has to complement your melody and the lyrics. Your idea should be something believable which people can recognize and relate or identify. Make sure it is substantial enough to be set to music.

As they do not know anything about what the whole story, so you have to provide them as many information as possible. For example your feeling about the situation, who are you in the story and what is the whole problem about.
