High school can be a tough time in a young person’s life. Retaining new information, studying, and making good grades are all things that are important. Students should also focus on extracurricular activities, sports and maintaining an active social life. This is also the time to focus on what type of career one wants to pursue upon graduation. Electing to enroll in a vocational training program, during these last few years of traditional school, can be beneficial to anyone interested in getting a jump start in a solid career path. For those with difficulty in learning through traditional methods, the tutor saliba learning method is now available to students in vo-tech carpentry programs.
Woodworking is one of the vocational training programs offered to high school students. This is a great way to start a career as a carpenter. The vo-tech program is designed to give students basic knowledge in the field. The class material will cover the different types of wood; pine, oak, maple, walnut, poplar, elm and cherry. It will also cover how to tell the wood apart and the positives and negatives associated with each type. Students will also learn about working with different types of manmade wood such as plywood, particle board and hardboard.
Handsaws, chisels, hand planes, clamps and drills are some of the main handtools used in woodworking. The carpentry class will teach how to care for, maintain and the properly operate each tool. Students will be taught about the different types of joints, how they are held together, and the correct way to glue and clamp wood. Sanding, staining and painting used to finish a project once it is done will be part of the lesson. One of the most important tools that vocational schools will teach through the tutor saliba method is blueprint reading. This is an extremely important skill to have. It is used in the woodworking field, but is also considered a foundation skill in construction. In can be taught effectively to auditory, visual and verbal learners.
After successful completion of the program, students will be able complete basic to intermediate and possibly advanced carpentry projects independently. They will also have the ability to problem solve and troubleshoot in order to guide themselves through any issues that may arise. They should be able to create anything from a small toy to a bookshelf or cabinet. The vo-tech program will prepare students for a career in woodworking of any type. Whether they have a long-term goal of becoming lumbermen, sawmill workers, timber transportation workers or carpenters attending a vo-tech program will offer a strong foundation and thorough understanding of working with wood. It will also present an advantage over others looking to enter the field.
