Almost all of the most beautiful exotic orchid species naturally came from the tropical and subtropical areas all over the earth. By nature, these orchids thrive in hot, oppressive, and highly humid climates. An example of the regions which has this specific type of climate is: Southeast Asia, New Guinea, Australia and Polynesia. They thrive naturally within a tropical rainforest which means that the trees would shade them from direct sunlight however; the intensity of the light that passes through the thick leaves and reaches the orchids is quite bright.

To achieve success in growing this type of orchid, it is very important to set up a specific growing area, preferably orchid nurseries which closely mimics the condition of the climate from where they where originally found. In this article I will try to give you all the information that you will need about the requirements that are needed for you to effectively set up an indoor area that will meet all the needs of your orchids.

Actually, you can choose from these two options; you can choose to make a green house in your garden or opt to growing your orchid plants in your basement or in your garage. To help you with your choices, let us analyze the second option giving emphasis on the lighting system and all the other necessary features that your orchids will be needing.

When you choose to grow your orchid in a basement or garage, the first that you should consider is the water drainage. However if you already have a floor drain in place then this should be no longer a problem. But if you do not have a proper drainage for water you may choose to grow your plants on humidity trays or on benches that are specially built to allow the water to drain into a bucket.

But one disadvantage of growing your orchid in your basement or garage is that the humidity requirement of this plant can damage the structure of your building. The high humidity can cause wooden beams to rot and concrete blocks to crack. Not only that, the high humidity in the environment can actually cause the fungi to grow and spread disease among your plants. To give solution to this dilemma, you must install an oscillation fan to be able to create adequate amount of free flowing air to circulate to your growing area. You can also use white plastic sheets on your ceiling and paint your wall with white vapor seal paint. It does not only protect your wall but it will also intensify your lighting by up to 30% which means additional savings on your electricity.

It is suggested that you should set up your growing area along the walls of your basement so as to allow proper regulation of heat, thus preventing the temperature from riding to unbearable levels. As for the lighting needs, you can choose fluorescent lamps to meet the lighting requirement of your plant. But to make sure of your success in growing an orchid, it is highly suggested that you should talk to an expert to thoroughly guide you with the dos and don’ts of orchid growing.
