As recent as a few years ago, adults and teenagers alike took to the sport and it was something that families did together. You can still find many hunters who still coon hunt. Whether you you are an experienced hunter who has never been coon hunting or a beginning all together, here a few simple tips that may help you.
One of the first things that you want to do is to know the area where you will be hunting. This is very important. Since this kind of hunt is done at night, you will want to walk through the area during the daytime to get accustomed to the area and any safety hazards. This will also help you to find the best trees that the raccoons will want to climb.
Another good tip is to have a hunting dog with an exceptional sense of smell and quick on its feet. It is the dog’s job to sniff out the raccoon and then chase him up the tree. Raccoons run rather fast. Once they have treed the coon, it is your job to shoot.
Having the right type of lighting is important. You'll need to see what you are shooting at. Good lighting will also be necessary to help you find your way in the dark. There are many types of light sources that you can use. Whether you use a lantern or head lamp, it doesn’t matter; just so that you can see where you are going and what you are shooting at.
Making sure that you have the proper gear with you as well is another important tip. You want to wear the right safety colors so that others will not mistakenly shoot you. You also need to let others know where you will be in case of an emergency. Safety should be the number one priority.
Having good prior knowledge of the area with the use of trained hunting dogs and safety equipment will enable you to have the best chances of having a successful hunt. These are three very important tips that you should use for any hunt. Coon hunting is still a very popular sport among many. With proper planning, you can partake in the fun and excitement too.
