Many people are unaware of what a barrister bookcase is, even though it’s one of the most distinguishable pieces of furniture available. Originally used by lawyers in England (barristers), a barrister bookcase shares the same traditional design of the majority of bookcases, but a clear glass front sets it apart. Barrister bookcases are known for their ability to provide greater protection of your books, or whatever other items you decide to store inside.
This comes in handy because the barrister bookcase allows you to show off the collection, while keeping (or even adding to) the interesting and eye-catching visuals that bookcases provide. The barrister bookcase is a great choice for serious book collectors who are concerned with preserving the condition of their books. The glass front-piece is effective in keeping out dust and moisture, and tempered glass can be added to the barrister bookcase to keep out harmful sunlight that will fade and degrade the book’s spine, cover and paper. The doors also act as a deterrent for curious onlooker’s who want to touch books that shouldn’t be handled.
Size, Shape and Function
Just like regular bookcases, you’ll find barrister bookcases in all shapes and sizes. Take an account of your book collection so that you get a general idea of what size barrister you need. Barristers look like stacked cabinets, so the more space you need, the more cabinets are required. One cabinet barrister bookcases are great pieces of accent furniture that be used generously throughout the house, while larger, 4-6 cabinet barrister bookcases can become the focal point of your room.
Another thing to look for is adjustable shelving. While you can get by with fixed shelves, adjustable shelves allow you more flexibility when it comes to creating visually pleasing setups. Need more space for your hardcovers? Not a problem. Trying to squeeze in a vase? Just adjust the shelving until you have the right fit.
Antique vs Modern
You’ll have to decide between an antique and modern barrister bookcase, and which side you end up on will probably be based on personal preference and the size of your budget. There is a fairly big selection of antique barrister bookcases on the market, so if you’re inclined it isn’t impossible to find one. Just know that you’ll be paying more for an antique than you would for a newer barrister. If you want that antique look but you don’t have the budget, look for a newer, distressed barrister. Antique barristers will almost definitely be constructed from solid wood, ensuring a higher level of quality. If you’re buying a new barrister bookcase, make sure to find one made from solid wood if quality is the main factor in your purchase.
Barrister bookcases are a great option for those looking for something a bit different than the bookcases you usually see, or they’re looking for a space saving unit that isn’t a corner bookcase. This classic piece of furniture is a great way to add personality to a room.
