The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the entire house and the way it is designed will have a decided influence on the ambience in your home. Your bathroom should reflect your personal taste and style and with so many design possibilities, you can design the bathroom of your dreams.
Color is an important deciding factor when decorating any room. Most people opt for cooler colors in this area of the home, mostly to keep in line with a water theme, but this is not always the norm. Primary colors like black, white and red can create a dramatic feel. A selection of sinks, tubs, basins and tiles can all be color coded to work with a color scheme.
Your color selection is an important consideration because in general renovations of the room will have you installing accessories that will be a part of the household for many years. Be sure that you can see yourself being at ease with a themed choice that will remain in style for years to come. Permanent fittings like bathtubs and basins come in a wide variety of designs and colors.
Modern styling has clean, clear lines and free standing stone tubs are extremely stylish but may not be practical in a smaller space. Keep in mind that if your home is decorated throughout in the country cottage style, that an ultra modern bathroom will no continue the theme. Keep your overall theme in mind. Faucets, shower heads and plugs for bath and basin all have an important impact on the styling of the overall room.
Window treatments have the same effect. Whether you choose to put up horizontal or vertical blinds, blinds made from bamboo or wood, or perhaps a patterned lace curtain, these will all affect the feel of the room. A room that does not receive direct sunlight would benefit from paler colors, particularly when considering the window treatment.
When selecting your color scheme, try to pick lighter colors for smaller rooms rather than bold, dark shades as this will make a small room look even smaller. Take the amount of natural lighting into account, as a room that receives little direct sunlight will appear even darker and smaller if you select dark, intense colors. Lighting is of the utmost importance.
A well placed mirror can have a dramatic effect when places on a focal wall in any room. A little forethought when selecting the right mirror for your room, particularly when tied in with matching accessories can create an individual and unique atmosphere. Damp and mould are a real problem in an area that is so often exposed to heat and moisture. A room that does not receive direct sunlight would benefit from paler colors, particularly when considering the window treatment.
Proper ventilation is imperative in a bathroom that is exposed to high moisture levels when family members use large amounts of hot water. The steamy atmosphere can lead to an overgrowth of mould, particularly on paint work. You should ensure that you invest in a high quality anti-fungal paint to treat the ceiling and the walls, should you not have floor to ceiling tiles.
