The Pell Grant is a great way for undergraduate students to locate educational funding in the United States. This grant is great because it does not need to be paid back, thus it is basically free money for school. The grant can only be used for college expenses like books and tuition, among other related education related expenses. The following are some tips for how United States citizens can apply for and be granted the federal Pell Grant.
The first step is an obvious one, and consists of the individual being enrolled in a college degree seeking program that accepts, and is eligible for Title IV funding. This means that the school must be accredited and recognized by the government’s Department of Education.
Next, the student will need to fill out the appropriate application to become eligible for the Pell Grant, more commonly known as the FAFSA, or Free Application for Student Aid. This application is available both in print form and online. Most high schools and college offices have the form and staff who will help the students fill it out. One should have tax forms and personal information like Social Security numbers on hand when filling out the FAFSA.
The Pell Grant is for people who are financially in need. Therefore one will need to meet certain financial standards for this. An individual should have an EFC (Expected Family Contribution) that is not more than 5,273. EFC is determined by information that is provided during the submission of the FAFSA. If you are an independent student, then you would need to make less than 7,000 dollars and have no dependents to earn the maximum grant amount.
One must also think about their choices when they apply for a Pell Grant. A conviction for drug possession, or school performance less than a C average could mean that your Pell Grant may be denied or taken away. This is why it is important to stay on top of your school work if you want the government to give you funding for school.
Really, if one meets the financial requirements, does his or her work, fills out the FAFSA, and is attending an accredited and recognized institution, a Pell Grant is within reach. Always reach out to the Financial Aid department at your school if you have concerns about paying for school and whether or not you do or do not qualify for this mode of funding. It can't hurt to try and get this grant, after all you do not have to pay it back and every bit counts when trying to pay for school.
