Austin's South Congress Avenue - Wonderfully Weird
Austin is known for many things, among them a laid-back vibe, live music, and "Keeping it Weird." While many Austin neighborhoods embody these traits, none does it better than South Congress Avenue.
Austin is known for many things, among them a laid-back vibe, live music, and "Keeping it Weird." While many Austin neighborhoods embody these traits, none does it better than South Congress Avenue. SoCo, as it is often called, is visited by thousands of tourists and locals every day. Located between Riverside and Oltorf in South Austin, the area is the home to hip clothing and specialty shops, art galleries, boutique hotels, and unique bars and restaurants.
Within walking distance of downtown Austin, SoCo perfectly captures both Austin's hometown hippy vibe and metropolitan feel. It is the one and only place in the city where you will find a world-class costume shop, old-fashioned candy store, vintage clothing boutique, and historic music venue all in one location. SoCo is also where you can find some of Austin's finest food trailers, serving a variety of treats from snow cones and cupcakes to hotdogs and BBQ.
The pedestrian-friendly area features several blocks of shops ranging from high-end salon to second-hand clothing boutique. In true Austin fashion, dogs are always welcome on South Congress. Many of the vendors even offer dog options on their menu or a free dog treat with purchase!
Once a month, street vendors and artisans set up shop on SoCo for "First Thursdays," a monthly event and outdoor market. South Congress shops also stay open late, often hosting in-store events and specials. Don't be surprised if you encounter street performers and find yourself dancing to live music while strolling SoCo, you are just doing your part to "Keep Austin Weird."
South Congress epitomizes the laid-back and friendly vibe of Austin, and it offers a wonderful view of the Austin Capitol. Surrounding this vibrant shopping & dining center is one of the city's most coveted neighborhoods.
