XJ's long roofline sweeps rearward to a short decklid. It's accentuated by chrome trim, which also runs along the beltline. The rear view of the XJ is the most stunning - and controversial. While "minimalism" - sans busy use of chrome - was the design approach, there's an in-your-face confidence with the styling. The rear end is tall, body-colored and only adorned with an enlarged Leaper logo. A huge design punch is given with the LED taillamps - incorporating a trio of vertical red stripes.

XJ's more-voluptuous form is cloaked in vibrant paint from a 14-color palette. Fitting for a powerful-looking design, with a profile sculpted to convey speed, the XJ is propelled by a choice of three potent 5. 0-liter V8s - a 285-horsepower naturally aspirated version, 470-horsepower supercharged engine and a 510-horse supercharged brute powering the Supersport model.

All engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with adaptive shifting that changes modes to accommodate driving ranging from conservative to sporty. Gears are selected with the turn of a large console-mounted knob and manual shifting is courtesy a Sequential Shift System featuring shift paddles mounted behind the steering wheel.

The XJ's driving character is vastly different from its predecessor's. It's a driver's car - more agile with a sportier-tuned suspension, 20 percent reduction in body roll and a more-direct steering feel. It benefits from a faster steering ratio, which is the same as the high-performance XFRs. Comfortable leather-clad seats enhance the driving experience. The nicely stitched leather, fine veneer inlays, and chrome and piano-black accents combine to provide an elegant setting. For 2011, the selections of interior colors (14), leathers and veneers are greater than ever. The Supersport model pushes luxury to the optimum level with semi-aniline seats, leather headliner and veneers with laser inlays.
