Flooding in your home or business can be very inconvenient and dangerous. It does not only damage property, it can also harm lives. Storms and heavy winter rains in Metro Vancouver including Burnaby can cause floods and during severe situations, water can surge into houses and destroy everything. However, there is nothing more left to do after a heavy flood than to clean up the damage. Flood damage restoration can be accomplished in two ways: either you avail of professional restoration services or you do it yourself. While water damage restoration is no easy task, it can be accomplished by anyone, provided that the right tools for it are available. Below are some tips on how to fix water damage after a flood:
Safety First
Make sure you know all the systems in your house such as how to shut off the main water and electrical. Make sure you're not creating any trip hazards. And especially don't let the water sit and grow mold, which can create health problems. If you're intent on doing it yourself, be careful.
Drain Your House of Water
The first step in water damage repair, of course, involves getting rid of all the water that managed to get into your house. This is perhaps one of the hardest tasks to accomplish. A water vacuum (wet vac) would be best for this job, as it can help suck out most of the water in the house. In cases where there is a lot of water to deal with, more elaborate tools may be necessary than just towels or a mop. Then you need to implement a dehumidifier and fans to dry it completely.
Dry Out All Your Things and Furniture
You can easily salvage all your furniture pieces if you had the means to dry them out before any real damage is felt. However, when it comes to appliances, you may need to hire the services of a technician to find out if they can still be repaired. Flood damage restoration involves fixing what has to be fixed and saving what can be saved. The best thing you can do is remove all the things from water exposure as soon as possible before they are damaged even more.
Clean Your Home Thoroughly
There are so many types of disease-causing bacteria that can accumulate in your home after water damage. After you have successfully removed all the remaining water, you have to clear your home of all things so that you can clean it thoroughly. Make sure to disinfect your floors and walls. Finally, you need to be sure your home is completely dry to prevent mold from growing in unseen places, which can be a serious health hazard. To be sure, you will need a moisture detector, or hire flood restoration professionals to test it for you.
