Bird watching can bring hours of entertainment to you and your indoor cats if you have some. In order to attract birds to your backyard, you should construct a feeding station for the birds to use. Such stations do not have to be expensive, designer models. Simply putting kitchen scraps on a platter in the backyard is beneficial to both you and the birds. You get your trash taken out and the birds get to fill their stomachs. E.g. Cut an orange in half and remove the inner parts leaving the skin intact, put a scoop of peanut butter inside and sprinkle some bird seeds, such as niger seed, on top before putting it out on a favorable place for the birds to access. They will eat it all.
If you are nifty with tools, take a walk in the woods and collect solid pieces of wood. Cut them up into pieces that can be used to construct a crude box. Put some sand and pebbles into the box and sprinkle some sunflower hearts on top to mimic seeds on the ground. Find a way of elevating the box such that it is easily accessible to the birds and away from your cats. You and your cats cans sit back and watch the aerial display of aerobatics as the birds feed at your improvised feeding station. The kind of feeding station you construct should mimic nature as much as possible if you are interested in other bird species other than the normal garden variety.
If you want to be fashionable and don’t want to get disapproving looks from your neighbors, go out and look at the available bird tables which are aesthetically designed. These are as varied as there are bird species. Certain models are said to favor certain species. E.g. a particular model may attract weaver birds while another may attract pigeons. These designer feeding stations can be simple gazebo-like structures while others may come equipped with an attached bath facility for the birds to ruffle their feathers in, and take a drink.
Whether home made, or pet store bought, a feeding station is a necessary asset to have in your back yard if you and your cats want to have a blast of colorful action and beautiful sounds from your backyard.
