There are quite a number of fatal conditions that have emerged along with all the advancements in science, one such condition is what we call "heartworm". Heartworm is a very common condition among domesticated animals that is brought about by larval infection or the presence of foreign organisms within the layers of their skin. Furthermore, this can eventually lead to multiple problems like infestations from the likes of fleas, mites, ticks, hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, tapeworms, etc. Hence, this condition can prove very harmful and highly fatal for your pets if left untreated or outright ignored. And you thought immediate medical attention was only very critical for human beings. On the contrary, our pets are in greater danger and are in need of more intensive and concentrated methods of treatment, most especially with a condition like heartworm.

With a more intensive treatment naturally comes a more significant medical bill. Sadly, this is true for all species and ailments, most especially with a disease as grave as heartworm. As a result, us pet owners would have to look for the most cost effective method and medicine out in the market to date. So as far as cost reduction and practicality is concerned, one very important tip would be to veer way from most branded variants of these medicines as they would only cost you more money without offering any more assurance or guarantee of a stronger dosage or a quicker effect. This is not to say that pet owners can be complacent at all in selecting the right medicine for their pets and worse, sacrifice quality for economy. Pet owners are therefore cautioned from buying or acquiring such medicines from shady sources as some of them have gotten their hands on fake or imitation medicines. Buyers beware. Instead, trust only licensed veterinarians to prescribe you these medicines and feel free to inquire about their generic counterparts because in buying the right medicines and treatments that they would need, choosing or administering the wrong kind might actually do more harm than good to your beloved pets. And none of us would want that.

So the best thing to do would be to familiarize yourself with the three types of heartworm medicine which are administered either through injections, oral means through the use of ingestible medicines, or topical (which is also called "spot on" medicine). Right away I would advise against the injections and leave this method to the likes and supervision of professionals. If you are looking for the easiest method, try Heartgard which is a beef flavored wafer-like medicine which can be mixed with dog food and conveniently ingested. Sentinel Chewables on the other hand also treat heartworm while addressing other potential problems and infections. For other brands and generic variants, do not think twice as to consult your vet because with the health and safety of your pet at stake, they deserve only the best.

Heartworm disease is a parasitic roundworm that develops inside the right side of the heart. These worms damage it and lessen the efficiency of the lungs and liver amongst the other vital organs of the body.
