The Shield episodes portray a distinctive version of the cop world, where policemen can cross the line set by rigid laws, to bring the guilty to justice. By painting a morally ambiguous cop world, where sometimes good becomes bad and bad becomes good, The Shield triggers a splurge of thoughts in the minds of viewers. A question that always arises in my mind after watching its episodes is that whether policeman should be granted ‘freedom of choice’, when it comes to dealing with heinous criminals or not.
We have often seen the justice dying a slow and steady death, when stringent laws make the fight between crime and judicial system, ‘a battle of unequal’. Old and rotten laws often prevent justice from reaching the victims of gruesome criminal acts. Taking all this into account, The Shield paints a unique version of cop world, where policemen can be corrupt, unethical, and yet when it comes to putting an end to the fear-provoking reign of an anti-social set-up, they are ultra-effective. They operate with freedom and fearlessness, while trying to maintain peace and order in the society.
Okay! It is all right to show a cop with his own set of rules as being ultra efficient at uprooting crimes, but is this practically feasible. I don’t think so! Rather then letting a cop make his own rules, we need to reform the justice system. No doubt, a policeman often feels bound and gagged, while dealing with criminals, due to inefficient laws, but it does not imply that he should be offered the freedom to make his own laws on such unfortunate occasions. Time has arrived to re-look into the law’ books and modify them as per the needs of society; otherwise stopping crime would become next to impossible.
Anyway, this is my opinion. If you want to form an opinion of yours, then you may watch The Shield online on any reliable website. I will appreciate many to join this debate with me and post their opinions. Let us see what final conclusion we reach at. Before ending I will like to shower praises on the makers of The Shield for coming up with a show, which dares to break the conventional formula for producing a police procedural series. Besides being a though-provoking show, The Shield is also an out and out entertainer.
