We have been reading quite a lot on the internet about magnetic generators and their capacity to generate free energy.

The notion that we can generate our own energy simply by building a machine using affordable magnets is absolutely remarkable. If it is possible to generate electrical power without relying on any exterior fuel source other than magnets then it won't be long before commercial magnetic generators are being produced.

I have seen them referred to as electromagnetic generators, permanent magnetic generators, perpetual magnetic generators and magnetic power generators.

Being an ordinary non-scientifically minded individual I still find it all somewhat perplexing.

So is there a distinction between an electromagnet and a permanent magnet?

Permanent magnets can be produced out of a variety of naturally occurring substances of which magnetite is easily the most powerful. They can also be made from synthetic substances for example neodymium. A neodymium magnet is the most powerful form of permanent magnet and is occasionally described as a super magnet.

Electromagnets are far stronger than even the most powerful permanent magnet.

The electromagnet was invented in 1825 by William Sturgeon, a British electrician. He demonstrated that a 7 ounce piece of iron which was wrapped around with wires and had a small electrical current going through it could easily lift nine pounds of metal. William Sturgeon began as an apprentice to a shoemaker but after educating himself in mathematics and physics he became a lecturer in science at the East India Company College in Addiscombe Surrey England.

An electromagnet becomes magnetic only if an electrical current flows through it and a generator that uses electromagnets or "field coils" requires a flow of electricity through the electromagnets for the machine to work. If there is no flow of electricity through the wires then it does not work.

The magnetic generator however uses the spinning magnets to generate electricity in the first place. It generates more power than is necessary to keep the magnets rotating and so you can use the excess to power your home.
