Decks and Patios
Owners of Austin homes should be sure to bring in any lightweight outdoor furniture, decorations or equipment. Any items on the deck or patio such as chairs, cushions, plants or lawn maintenance equipment should be protected from high winds. They should be anchored down or stored in a shed or garage. Anything made from aluminum or a soft, impressionable material should be sheltered from hailstorms. This includes planters, grills, birdfeeders, screens and terra cotta figurines.
Vehicles
If an Austin home does not have a garage or carport, the homeowner should consider having one built. Hailstorms can damage vehicles and leave dents on the hood and roof or fender areas.
Indoor Safety
Use draperies, blinds and other window treatments to protect the interior of Austin homes from shattered glass. Occupants should stay indoors on the bottom floor and away from windows during a storm with hail or high winds. During thunderstorms it is wise to stay away from any items that can conduct lighting, such as water and plumbing, electrical outlets or landline telephones. Many garage floors are reinforced with metal mesh. These should be avoided when possible. Unplug items such as televisions and computers.
Animals
Pets and livestock should be brought in from the outdoors during hailstorms, thunderstorms and high winds. They should not be in areas fortified by glass or light wood that can shatter easily. Sharp hanging objects, such as those in a barn, are dangerous as well in the event of a problem with the roof. Metal, terra cotta and slate roofed shelters are also ineffective against large hail and may sustain damage.
Outdoor Safety
When people are caught outdoors as a storm suddenly approaches, they should seek indoor safety. Anyone in the water should exit immediately. If there is no indoor shelter available, avoid tall trees, fencing and power or flagpoles. A vehicle with a solid top will be sufficient for safety if the occupants do not touch metal car parts and sit in the vehicle at the side of the road or away from traffic with the hazard lights on.
The best way to find protection during a sudden storm in Austin is to be prepared. Plan ahead. Consider what needs to be moved and anchored in the event of a storm warning. Pay attention to weather forecasts and have a contingency plan in the event of a boating or camping trip. When purchasing Austin, Texas real estate, consider the durability of the structure as well as its roofing and outbuildings in the event of a storm.
