There are many different materials available today for kitchen countertops. This includes different types of natural stone, such as granite and quartz, as well as laminate, wood and ceramics. Each has distinct advantages and disadvantages. For those planning an Arlington kitchen remodeling project, here is a look at what some of the options are and what they feature.
Granite
A durable natural stone, granite is among the most popular in choices for new kitchen countertop materials. For the home cook, granite does not have to be babied as much as some of the other surfaces, especially if it is sealed. Sealed granite is stain-proof, although unsealed granite is not. The family chefs can use cutlery on it and roll out dough for pastries on its smooth solid surface if desired. It can handle hot pots and pans. For an Arlington kitchen remodel, cost of granite runs about $70 to $100 per square foot.
Laminate
A laminate surface is one of the most affordable types of countertops. It requires use of protective cutting boards for chopping and slicing, as well as preparing dough and foods that will stain. It burns or discolors when hot pots and pans are placed on its surface. It is difficult to repair when burned or chipped, due to its layered fabrication. Laminate comes in many different colors and styles. It is easy to match with other kitchen finishes and decorations and costs about $10 to $45 per square foot.
Wood
A classic look in any kitchen, wood is a fairly durable material. It withstands abuse well from slicing and dicing on its surface, but does not take well to stains and water if it is not sealed. Unsealed wood is porous in nature and will swell with prolonged exposure to water near the sink. It should not be used for rolling out dough when baking. Invest in a pastry board for that. The price per square foot varies wildly in wooden countertops, depending on the type of wood used and the intricacy of the design. It can run anywhere from $40 to $150.
Ceramic Tiles
Countertops made of ceramic tiles are an affordable option for home remodeling projects. They do not offer a smooth, solid surface, so they do not work as well for food preparation. Using cutlery and preparing dough and baked goods is best left to a cutting or pastry board. Hot pots and pans will not damage the surface, but it does stain if grout in between the ceramic tiles is not sealed. Ceramic tiles add a decorative flair and have a wide range in price. They can be purchased at about $10 to $100 per square foot.
