A popular homeowner complaint is that there is never enough room. The longer people live in a home, the more possessions they collect. The more they have, the less room there is to store it and to move about the home. Sometimes creating ample space is a simple matter of calling a Northern Virginia custom remodeling contractor. There are many places in the home that can provide more storage and living with just a few adjustments.
Walls
When a room seems confined by its walls, a homeowner might consider what things would look like without one of them. It frequently opens up an area and makes room for more furniture or wall cabinets. Removing a wall can transform a kitchen from a confined space designed for preparing and cooking meals into an eat-in kitchen with a cozy place for the family to spend time together over meals, school projects and important discussions. Taking down a wall that creates a narrow hallway might make the living room or den roomier and a nicer area for entertaining guests.
Closets
The master bedroom often has plenty of closet space. Some master bedrooms have two closets. Walk-in closets are wonderful when they are used for storage, but sometimes they can be turned into bathrooms or reduced to make room for a few more amenities in the existing bathroom. On the other hand, if closets are too small, built-in shelving can be added or removed to better serve the person using it. The kitchen pantry can be transformed from a large area with a handful of shelves into a gold mine of storage space for food, dishes and small appliances when extra shelf space is added.
Appliances
While doing a residential remodeling project, consider whether the appliances in the home are too big and bulky. Many newer models of washers, dryers and refrigerators are much smaller than they were even 10 years ago. There is also the matter of choosing the right size. A homeowner should measure the area available before deciding upon an appliance. There should also be ample electrical outlets and sufficient power available through the circuits. One option is to choose the most important features needed for cooking in the kitchen. It might be a double oven for one home, while another cannot live without a freestanding range with a hood.
Cabinets
Be sure to use any available wall space for cabinetry if it is needed. The wall cabinets can be redesigned or have new ones added above and/or below. The placement or addition of shelves can drastically change the complexion of a storage unit. One other factor to consider is whether the cabinets actually need a door. This will allow for slightly oversized items to fit on a shelf that would otherwise be inadequate.
