Scooters’ compact size and efficient performance levels have resulted in these vehicles becoming a popular mode of urban transport in recent times. However, there are a number of factors riders should consider when taking to the roads to ensure that they stay safe:
Riders must have a valid scooter licence to be on the road – This may seem a fairly obvious, but it is one worth emphasising. The Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) test is a prerequisite for all people over the age of 16 who wish to ride a scooter. A certificate is issued after a full day’s instruction on safety theory and practical riding skills, including how to safely conduct avoidance manoeuvres and how to take a corner – essential information for all scooter riders.
Always wear adequate clothing, including protective gear – The body is subject to the natural elements while riding a scooter, so wearing warm rainproof clothing is necessary to ensure that bikers remain comfortable and focused at all times, especially in adverse conditions. Wearing a helmet and other protective gear is also vital to protect the body from serious injury should an accident occur.
Stay alert and follow the traffic rules – A distracted road user is a dangerous one. This is why it is essential that all scooter riders remain alert while on the road, and ensure that they are vigilant of both the road in front of them, as well as other vehicles.
Ride defensively – Along with obeying the traffic rules scooter riders should also ride defensively, yielding to other vehicles when in doubt. Always maintain an adequate following distance to allow sufficient time for emergency braking and avoidance manoeuvres.
Always ensure their scooter is in good working order – Make sure that the headlights, brakelights and indicators are functioning correctly, and that the tyres are inflated to specification. If riding a petrol scooter, make sure that the petrol, oil, brake fluid and coolant are at the correct levels. For an electric scooter, ensure that the battery is fully charged to avoid running out of juice and potentially being stranded.
In addition to following these safety tips, scooter riders should take out a scooter insurance policy from a reputable insurer such as Express Insurance: http://www.expressinsurance.co.uk/other-insurance/scooter-insurance, for peace of mind.
