Next to feeding him, the most pet supplies you'll buy for a puppy will probably revolve around training him not to use the bathroom everywhere. If you don't do this early enough, your puppy will assume it's perfectly fine to use the bathroom anywhere and these are habits that will be hard to break later on. In order to house train your puppy correctly, you'll need the right supplies. It won't be a simple thing to do, and there will be pitfalls along the way, but with some patience along with the supplies needed to do the job, you'll have your puppy house trained—eventually!
Training pads are the types of pet supplies that can be used when initially house training a puppy. Locating the pads in a certain location and teaching your dog that this is an acceptable area to use the bathroom will get your puppy in a routine. It's important to put the pads in the same spot over and over again to establish the routine, however. The dog will eventually learn where to go to the bathroom in the house, and you'll have fewer messes elsewhere to clean up. Once the routine has been set, you can substitute the pricier training pads for old-fashioned newspaper.
Treats are a common incentive for good behavior for a dog, so stock up on treats the next time you're getting pet supplies. Rewarding your puppy for going to the bathroom in his designated place encourages good behavior. The dog will learn to associate the treat with doing his business in his spot, so he'll continue to do so if he wants to get the treat. This is also a useful tool when house training a puppy. Remember to refrain from giving him treats for bad behavior, though. Puppy-dog eyes can be powerful, but don't give in to the temptation!
Since accidents will invariably continue to happen during the house training process, you'll need plenty of cleaning supplies on hand. Bleach can be used to neutralize urine, but be careful where you pour it as it will stain some fabrics. Going to the pet supply store and buying cleaners specifically designed to handle pet messes will be more beneficial than using ordinary household cleaners. Learn to scold and punish your puppy for making these messes so he associates having good things taken away from him for going to the bathroom where he isn't supposed to. Some tough love is necessary, but your dog will eventually learn not to make the whole house his own personal bathroom.
