The advancement of the telephone in modern society started with the traditional land line telephone. In the early days of this device, only the very wealthy could afford to have such a luxury in their home. Very quickly the telephone became an item that was seen in more and more homes. Today, we see the cell phone becoming the telephone of choice for younger people who do not see the need for a land line phone any longer. There are some great benefits to switching completely to a cell and sending the land line into the history book.

A mobile phone may have a larger up front expense, but over time the amount that is saved on the phone more than makes up for the cost of the phone. Some cell phone owners spend a great deal of money on upgrading their phones which is very different than the land line telephone. Those who go over their minutes on the cell phone plan may end up paying a great amount of money on their bill.

Cellular phones typically do not charge for long distance charges. This means for many people that the cost of a cell phone bill can be cheaper than a land line phone. If you have family members that are long distance calls for you, this can be a great cost savings. For some people the amount that is saved every month on long distance calls adds up to a night on the town once a month.

One of the greatest advantages that the mobile phone has over other telephones is the portability. The cell phone can be put in a pocket, briefcase or purse and carried anywhere you go. This means that you are never out of reach of your friends, family and business associates. The cell phone also gives you a level of peace and calm when you consider the safety that the device offers you. You can call for help no matter where you find yourself.

The features that you usually have to pay for on a land line are free on most cell phone plans. Features such as call waiting, caller ID, voice mail and even call forwarding come standard with most mobile phone plans. The features on your land line could end up costing you a great deal every month if you added the charges to your monthly bill. The fact remains that the infrastructure for land line telephones are there and they are probably not going anywhere anytime soon.
