Patchouli essential oil is effectively used in aromatherapy but is also renowned for its valuable positive effects on the skin. Patchouli is a bushy plant that grows up to three feet in height, with leaves closely resembles the mint family. It is also known as Pogostemon cablin or Pogostemon patchouli. This fresh plant is crushed and fermented before steam distillation to obtain best quality oil, making it as an essential oil. It grows well in tropical or warm areas because it thrives in hot weather but not direct sunlight.
Using Patchouli essential oil comes with many health benefits. It is mainly used in skin care and for the treatment of skin disorders like acne, cracked or excessively dry skin, dermatitis, eczemas, sores, scars, fungal infections, as well as in treating dandruff. The cosmetic uses of this essential oil are for the treatment of rough, tired, and inflamed skin. It is also proven to be effective in toning, thus it can be used as anti-wrinkle therapy with its tissue regeneration properties.
It is being classified as an anti-inflammatory, emollient, cell regenerative, antimicrobial, anti-viral, antitoxic, and fungicidal herbal medicine. Anti-fungal property is used for the treatment of athlete’s foot.
The heavy and strong smell of the plant may not appeal to everyone but with fermentation, it can yield a distinguishing aroma that can be used as an important fixative ingredient in the manufacture of fine perfumes and cosmetics. It is used mainly as a base with lengthens the time of evaporation of other more volatile oils thus making the aroma linger for longer durations.
The earthy scent has an uplifting feel and sense of calmness. Nervous system benefits include the reduction of anxiety. The rich scent has been noted to have aphrodisiac effect and popular to those who are looking for a romantic environment. It has a unique blend of relaxing and stimulating effects. This is especially helpful to those experiencing lack of sexual drive: frigidity for women and impotence for men. It works initially by relaxing your mood and relieving you from everyday stress with paves the way for stimulation.
Responsible use of the oil is advised since high doses may cause loss of appetite for some people. This oil can be great in massage use. Always check if the recipient of the massage can tolerate the scent prior to application.
