The world of photography is marked by a rapid growth in terms of technology and ideas. Each year, millions of pictures are being shot in different type of films and cameras. Unlike some of the older art forms that call forth years of training to master the technique, you can quickly learn how to take a picture. To be a successful professional, mastery of the basic fundamentals is an absolute necessity. By developing photographic composition skills, you can create photographs that portray movement, depth, life, shape and form - recreating the impact of the original scene.
Photographic composition is the placement of the subject matter within the picture area. When it comes to creative photography a lot depends on the photographer's skill. This is due to the fact that unlike us a camera does not distinguish. When we look at a scene we specifically see only the important elements and ignore the rest. On the contrary a camera sees all the details within the field of view. Perhaps, this is the reason why majority of our pictures are often disappointing with backgrounds being cluttered with unwanted objects or the entire scene lacking in significance. Good pictures are rarely created. To create one, an understanding of the basic principles of composition is a must. Features such as the placement of the elements of a scene within a picture, attractiveness, soothingness - all contribute in creating a good composition.
To develop a photographic composition skills you need to look, study and practice. Every time you press the shutterbug you need to look around within the viewfinder. Also you need to evaluate the way each element will be recorded, how it relates to the entire composition. A complete familiarity with the camera and an in depth know-how about its operation is important to create that perfect picture. You need to experiment with the camera and look at the results carefully to see whether they meet your expectations. Only with experience and knowledge can you concentrate on the composition. Carefully study the principles of good composition. Go through the books and magazine articles that deals in composition. You can also analyze different medias such as motion pictures, books and newspapers, magazines and evaluate the key qualities of the picture or the TV image – weigh the drawbacks and positive qualities. You can accordingly select the principles to be applied to make the picture better.
It is is impossible to define good or accurate composition. There are no hard-and-fast rules that make sure good composition in every photograph. The principles only provide a means of achieving pleasing composition when applied properly. Some of these principles and elements are: Center of interest, Subject placement, Simplicity, Viewpoint and camera angle, Balance, Shapes and lines, Pattern, Volume, Lighting, Texture, Tone, Contrast, Framing, Foreground, Background and Perspective.
