Moving Day Tips
Moving can be as exciting as it is frustrating. You're eager to move into a new space, decorate, and invite friends over. But you also have to pack everything up from your old place, move everything into the car or moving truck, haul all of your belongings this way and that, and figure out where to put everything. Here are a few tips to make your move less of a hassle.
Moving day starts the day before, so make sure that you're ready for the actual event. Do this by making sure that you get a good night's sleep and a good breakfast so that you are focused and energized for the task to come. If you have children or pets you'll want to make sure that there is someone to properly watch them while you're busy getting things in and out of their new home.
On moving day make a last walk through of the house to make sure that everything is packed up and ready to go before the movers arrive. This saves times and allows you to assure yourself that you have everything. Movers are there to move things, not delegate, so make sure that they know where, when, and how things are going. This way there is less confusion and frustration for both you and them. As an extra bit of insurance, it may be a good idea to take photographs of furniture and appliances before the move. That way if anything gets damaged you'll have proof of the item's prior condition.
Do your homework when looking for a moving company. You'll want to go with someone that's well-recommended and well-experienced with a number of moves, be they big moves, small moves, simple moves, complicated moves, local moves, and/or intrastate moves. Make sure that the movers know where they are going and if they should expect any intrusions or difficulties. This will save them time and will save you money. It's also a good idea to do as much of the moving as you can, no matter how long it takes. A moving company might charge more if you need a larger truck or if you ask them to pack as well as unpack your belongings.
The time of your move is crucial as well. You don't want to move when it's raining, snowing, extremely hot or particularly windy. Traffic is something else to keep in mind as being stuck in traffic for several hours when your destination is only a few minutes away may cost you more. If moving into an apartment, make sure that there aren't any time restrictions that may complicate things. You'll also want to make sure that you have easy and constant access to your apartment so that you don't have to move your car.
Moving doesn't have to be all frustration and no fun. Who knows, you may discover that you have a knack for it and want to start your own moving company! It all boils down to planning, thinking two steps ahead, and being inventive when problems arise, and even when they don't. Following these tips are sure to take some of the stress away. Now all you have to worry about is decorating!
