There are several options that homeowners have when choosing their bathroom tile. Granite, however, has become an increasingly popular option because of its beautiful aesthetics and durable functionality. Furthermore, it has become a stone that has been often thought of as prestigious. It has even become a deciding factor for home buyers, with people declining to buy a home simply due to the fact that it is does not have granite countertops or tiling.
There are several advantages to choosing granite as your bathroom tile. The first, and most obvious, is the fact that it is one of the hardest stones in the world. Its composition, which consists of mica, quartz, feldspar, and other various minerals makes it extremely hard, and therefore extremely durable. Another major advantage for choosing it for your bath tile is the fact that it is beautiful. The mix of the stones creates a unique pattern on every slab of granite produced. Therefore, in the same way that your fingerprints are unique to only yourself, your bathroom tiling will never be identical to that of your neighbors.
Although there are several advantages to choosing granite tiles, there are also some disadvantages. One major disadvantage is the fact that granite, like any other shiny stone, is going to be slippery when touched by water. This obviously can be quite dangerous to homeowners using it as a bath flooring tile. This does not mean, however, that it should never be used for floor tiling as it can be treated with non-slip substances, or alternatively you can use a rug on top of it.
Furthermore, many homeowners use granite tiling for the vanity and wall tiling only, and choose a different stone for the floor tiling. This can be one possible solution if the homeowner is intent on using it in the room. Another major disadvantage is its cost relative to other options available for bathroom tiling. Because it is such a prestigious stone, and the cost of production is quite high, the overall price per square foot is considerably more expensive than other tiling options like laminate tiles for example. One way to offset the high price of granite is to buy it from a wholesaler. If the bathroom is large enough, this may be an option for homeowners. Another way to lower the cost of is to purchase "junk" pieces of granite. If you find a wholesaler that has mis-cut slabs, they may sell those scraps for a lower price.
