More and more people are resuming studies to acquire knowledge. An advanced degree and enhanced skill are the concrete assurance of a better future in terms of decent renumeration and top-tier posts. Now for the middle-aged persons, it is quite impossible to join a regular course. Enrollment into a full time course means taking a break from the job and that may not be the best solution for many professionals. For them, distance learning is the most suitable choice to assimilate knowledge without any interruption in their professional life.
The idea of distance learning is at a wide variance with our very familiar concept of conventional education. The traditional learning is classroom-oriented which means the students are required to be present in the educational institutes in person. The interaction is of face-to-face type . The learners must abide by the rigorous rules and regulations as set by these institutes. Distance learning came up with fresh idea and innovative features. The modernized mode of communication between a teacher and pupil through printed materials or electronic media does not require the students to attend the land-based institutes. That is why distance learning is considered the most feasible option to acquire knowledge.
Distance education is technology-based. The advancement in the field of technology is responsible for the robust growth and soaring popularity of distance learning education. With the passage of time, newer methods of learning have been introduced to spread this off-campus program to the remotest zones of every nook and cranny of the globe. Distance education is not restricted within a defined boundary unlike the conventional learning. It means that anybody beyond the geographical boundary of a country is allowed to access the distance learning program without leaving his native land. Training through distance mode is imparted using correspondence or regular mail. Audio and visual media have also become a part of this contemporary system of learning to reach to a larger pool of students.
Distance learning is offered in different domains including engineering, management, law, foreign languages and many other fields. So, an extensive range of disciplines makes it possible for the students to select the right courses in accordance with their needs. Though both full time and part time courses are on offer but the later ones are the most favorite with the working classes due to paucity of time. Distance learning courses are offered at different levels including primary, secondary and university stage. But the university level of studies have gained much popularity as compared to the others. Apart from the professionals, distance education has become a popular choice for the students also. Management and the computer courses are the favorite picks for them. As the brick and mortar institutes distillate only a few candidates out of several applicants, therefore, the majority of the rejected candidates opt for distance education. Often the distance learning authority of an underdeveloped country collaborates with an institute from the foreign shore. In that case, the foreign institute may open up a study center in the developing country. The UK MBA in Nigeria program best exemplifies the benefits of such collaboration. Management training is provided by the reputed B-schools of UK and students earn a foreign degree without leaving their native land.
