Frozen yogurt not only tastes good, it's also a healthy replacement for fat-filled ice cream. A family that eats a lot of ice cream would be much better off consuming frozen yogurt instead. Eating it probably isn't going to help you lose weight, but you won't gain weight from it like you would eating a similar helping of ice cream. It's much lower in fat, and it contains healthy live cultures, making it the smart choice for dessert.
The biggest health benefit to eating frozen yogurt, or fro-yo as fans like to call it, is the presence of live cultures. Live and active cultures offer a number of health benefits and have been linked to bone and joint health as well as a healthy immune system. While there is no hard evidence that eating yogurt alone is responsible for these benefits, existing studies indicate the benefits are positive.
One known benefit of eating yogurt is the fact that the live cultures and bacteria help with digestion. The bacteria contained in this tasty treat are good bacteria, ones that are needed by your body. People who are lactose intolerant and have trouble eating milk products often have no problem with yogurt. The bacteria help the body process the lactose.
Another health benefit is the fact that fro-yo is low in fat, It is made with a much lower amount of fat than ice cream is, and is made with a yogurt and milk instead of cream. While ice cream is close to 15% milk fat, frozen yogurt contains less than 1%. This difference alone should push people to switch over to the healthier treat.
While it is definitely a much healthier option than many of the other frozen desserts, there is one thing you need to take into consideration. The fat content is low, but there is every bit as much sugar in frozen yogurt as there is in ice cream. You still need to keep your serving sizes small and limit the amount you eat daily. If not, you may go over your recommended daily intake of sugar. Doing this can have a negative impact on your health, so be careful as to how much you eat. There are sugar-free versions available, but these are often packed full of additives.
Fro-yo can be purchased in the ice cream section of your local store or can be found in a number of small franchises that have popped up in the last few years. It's a popular treat, so it's likely your neighborhood has at least one place that specializes in it. Another new fad is to make it yourself at home. You can make it in a regular ice cream machine or you can buy a machine that is designed specifically for frozen yogurt. Either way, you're making something that is healthier for you and your family in the long run. Just use some common sense and exercise restraint when serving it, and you and your family will be healthier and happier in the long run.
