Knowing about all of the different ways to keep your fireplace safe is certainly important, because each year there are multiple children who suffer serious injuries from these kinds of accidents and some that even die as a result of them. One of the first things that are important for everyone who has a fireplace to know is that getting annual inspections is crucial to keeping it safe. There are certain chimney specialists that you will be able to turn to when you want a thorough investigation of how yours is functioning. Getting someone to take a thorough and comprehensive look at this area of your home is essential to keeping everyone in your home safe.
Making sure that all of the fire alarms in your home, especially the ones nearest to your fire place, have working batteries in them all the time is a good idea. The last thing you want is for a fire to break out of the designated area and into your home without even knowing it has happened until it’s too late. People who have fireplaces in their homes are encouraged to make sure that they have working fire alarms that will not fail them when they need their advance warning the most. Many people do not replace the battery once it is low and does the beep every minute. Instead they pull it out to stop being annoyed by it. This is a terrible mistake.
Keeping all materials that could catch fire at least three feet from the fireplace is something else that you will want to consider, because you never know what could happen. There have been many incidents in the past with people who neglect certain objects that were too close to the flames and as a result a fire rampaged through their home. Make sure that you arrange all off the irons as well as the grade to ensure that none of the logs in the enclosure come loose and fall out.
Another thing that is important to keep in mind as far as fire safety in the home goes is to only use enough gas or wood depending on which type of set up you have, to achieve the right temperature in the room. Using an excess of gas or wood can mean trouble. When rekindling the fire it is important to not use liquids that are flammable. Those who keep these tips in mind will have a safe home that is free from potentially lethal fire hazards.
