Improving Home Features Saves Money, Energy

There is more to home improvement than changing the wallpaper and fixing things when they break. Upgrading a home’s basic necessities, such as security, plumbing and windows will go a long way towards saving energy, lowering energy bills and increasing comfort for people living there.
Home Automation
There is more to home automation than having a nice entertainment center in the living room and changing channels and volume with one remote control. A home entertainment system can create a room of luxury and comfort, but home automation goes far beyond that. A homeowner can add features such as a home security system and other features to make the environment safer and more convenient. For example, one option is to install alarm systems in Northern Virginia homes that prevent burglary and prowlers. Another option is to have lights automatically illuminate when someone arrives in the driveway. Energy-saving features can be added to a home to help the residents save money and live more comfortably. A quality home automation and entertainment contractor can make recommendations based on the needs and wants of the homeowner.
Plumbing
Improving a home’s plumbing system is less of a change in appearance than it is in functionality. Changing appliances and fixtures that focus on water is another way to upgrade a home and make it more environmentally friendly. The use of more energy efficient pipes is one method of lowering utility bills. A new tankless hot water heater, a low flush toilet or lower usage shower head is one way to lower utility bills. For truly outdated plumbing, the homeowner may be required to implement newer Northern Virginia plumbing and building code requirements, such as a limit on how hot the water can be when it comes out of the faucet. The more energy efficient and environmentally-friendly a home is, the more modern it is.
Windows
Replacement windows in Northern Virginia homes are another avenue of energy efficiency. Vinyl windows allow less radiant heat energy from the sun into the home while keeping out gentle breezes between the cracks and crevices that are so common with older windows. This is especially important in wintertime when the cold outside air can make a room feel very chilly. Rather than turning up the thermostat to stay warm, vinyl replacement windows will create a tight seal around the perimeter and keep the cold air out. While replacement windows are environmentally friendly, they are also homeowner friendly. They are easier to clean and can be removed with little hassle when needed.
