Parents tend to care more about safety and function than anything else when choosing furniture for their children's rooms. However, whenever possible, the children's tastes should be taken into consideration and every effort made to blend the two ideas. This can be a great time for parents and kids to learn to know each other better and can be a lot of fun.
Even small children, as young as three or four, can have a pretty good idea of what they want. A parent's job is to help them make good choices based on solid reasoning. When children are allowed a part in designing their rooms, it enables them to use their creativity and can teach them how to make good choices, or the consequences of bad ones. When a child has a say in the decor of their room, it feels more "theirs."
These days there are many choices in children's furniture. Some children want to have a specific color, theme or cartoon character. Of course, some children will want something like a friend has or like they have seen on TV. Taking what a child wants into consideration does not mean just giving them whatever they think they want at the moment. Parents can guide their children in making wise choices while trying to use some of the child's ideas.
For some parents this is an excellent time to teach a child how to spend money wisely. Others may buy a child the desired piece of furniture as an award for something outstanding they have done. Some parents make a deal with their children to use furniture decoration as a reward for doing something for a period of time, or to pay part if the children save part. Work out what is the best compromise for you and your child/children.
When colors and designs are proposed, it can help to make a list of all those things that will be needed to accomplish the desired effect. This will help you put in writing the probable cost of the idea. This gives you something concrete to go over with your child/children to help them understand costs. Which, in turn, can help teach them the importance of saving money.
You also need to look at the materials that are used in making the various pieces of furniture. This is especially important in the case of a child with allergies. Another valid concern is the use of toxic materials in the construction or painting of the furniture. Recent times have seen far too many recalls due to unsafe or toxic toys. This should make us all pay attention to what we buy for our children and their rooms.
