Most people agree that the personal touches are what makes a house a home. For people just moving into a brand new home, it can be an overwhelming prospect to decorate such a large and empty space. People who want to create a new look to their home's interior may not know where to begin. Whatever the case, you should not be intimated by this project. You should have fun with it as this is an inspiring new experience.
The most fundamental aspect of interior design is finding a balance between those things that work well together and those that clash with one another. An interior design scheme that has elements that work well together will be more tranquil than one that has a jumble of various patterns all bunched together. In certain circumstances, contrasting designs may do well, but not in the majority of cases. It will only result in you feeling anxiety ridden and overwhelmed. When determining how to best balance the concepts of complement and contract, the basic factor that needs to be considered is how the house has been designed from an architectural standpoint. From this standpoint, the design you select will either clash with your home or enhance it.
For instance, a house that has been done in a Victorian style can be enhanced by using elements taken from a Victorian design scheme. If you were to decorate the home with contemporary looking furniture, this would be a way of creating a design scheme that conflicts with the home. By making design choices that compliment the home, you will be creating a serene atmosphere. When you choose to make design changes that contrast with the original style of your home, there will be a struggle between the new and old styles.
When selecting furniture colors and materials, the same logic will apply. An effective method to use in finding out the colors that work well together and those that clash is to use the color wheel. You can create an intriguing look to the room by using one specific color for the wall and then by choosing curtains with contrasting colors.
It is also imperative that you look at how well a piece of furniture will hold up over time. Because furniture is an expensive item to purchase, it should be thought of as an asset. It is impractical to purchase something that is inferior in quality. Along with the furniture's sturdiness, you must also consider its attractiveness. Many times, you can't find furniture that fulfills both needs.
