Save With Unfinished Kitchen Cabinets

When considering the benefits of buying unfinished cabinets as opposed to finished cabinets, the most obvious reason of all is price. Depending on the size of your job, by comparison you can save hundreds to even thousands of dollars. The savings of course will allow you to spend more in other areas such as appliances and or countertops.
One shouldn't assume that just because these cabinets are cheaper in price, and can be purchased in stock at most local home centers, that the quality will not be good enough. When good installation is coupled with proper care and upkeep, they should endure many years of daily use.
While the basic construction is similar, there are some differences from custom, more expensive cabinets and the typical unfinished ones that you would find in a home store. These differences are the attention to minor details, such as joinery methods and techniques, of which the quality in finished construction tends to be a bit higher. For example, you may notice as you inspect the cabinet drawers that on the underside the glue has been applied in a less than precise manner. No big deal.
It will also be obvious when you install the sink that the backing is made up of a rather thin wood-like, veneer material that seems to be very fragile. Again, this is no big deal. The good thing is that the differences are relatively unseen or at least unnoticeable to most average homeowners, and your guests unless they helped you install will never know in the end that the cabinets were ever unfinished.
Don't let the extra labor of installing unfinished cabinets intimidate you. Finishing most cabinets is a rather easy process, which includes a series of light duty sanding as well as applications of stain and finish or paint.
One should note however, that time and skill should be factors considered when deciding whether or not to go the unfinished route. The fact is, the finishing process will have to be done at some point, be it by you or someone more experienced. Layout, level, and forethought are skills which are necessary to succeed in doing it yourself. You've got to be patient enough to allow yourself to learn the easy, yet challenging process.
Even if you decide to have an expert installation, you can look forward to savings and cabinets that will rival much more expensive ones and are sure to be a topic of conversation for any guests that may visit your home.
