The first thing of course is that you are hiring a legitimate company. Are they insured? Are they certified? These are definitely legitimate concerns, but you should also take note that some roofing contractors do not look as orthodox as you would like. Does that mean they are incapable of doing the job? Absolutely not. Many independent contractors out there roof for a living. However, there are standards that you should hold for any type of job.
For one thing, you want to make sure that the roofing contractor you use is licensed, and can at least provide their own materials. There are some exceptions to this however. If you are financing the job through a bank, the bank will likely cut you a check during each stage of the job completion. The contractor can use that check to supply materials, and this will do just fine.
Will the contractor get rid of your old roof? This is a very important aspect to consider in any case, especially when you think about how large a roof is. In addition to that, you need to make sure the contractor plans to clean up the mess they make installing your new roof. You would be surprised at the amount of debris that can be generated from a simple roof installation.
There will be nails littering the ground, paper, boxes, shingle wrapping, and a number of other things. Of course these are the things that you would find after a basic shingle installation. If you are dealing with a full roof installation, there will be plywood and other roofing materials laying about, and these are not things that the average person will be able to dispose of.
Does the contractor offer a warranty? Let's be honest, you expect a roof to hold out for many years, but there may be cases where it simply doesn't. Mistakes happen, and if something occurs within the warranty life, the contractor should come out and fix it free of charge. This is something you should expect of any roofing contractor, so make sure you inquire about it before you commit to any roof installation.
Typically, a contractor will offer a twenty year warranty, though they might offer a thirty year warranty for a larger price. Make sure you examine the conditions and stipulations of the warranty carefully before committing as this will help you to choose the right contractor and get the best roofing job possible.
Choosing a contractor can be rather difficult. Try to keep in mind that this is not a decision you want to rush! Your roof is a very important investment, and as such you must be very careful as to who you choose. As long as you remember that, you should have a great experience.
A well maintained roof is important to protect your home and protect and enhance your investment in your home.
