When choosing an angle grinder for you needs, consider whether you will be using it for precision work or heavier use.
Avid home-improvement and DIY project enthusiasts, take note. When assembling your tool kit to take on the numerous do-it-yourself projects around your home, a powerful, useful angle grinder should be near the top of your list. This tool doesn’t just grind, shape and polish, it’s also an able cutting tool that works via a spinning abrasive disc. If you need to cut and remove rust from metal when restoring a car, a heavy-duty grinder is the tool for you. When you need to cut tile or grind stone pavers in your landscaping work, there’s no better tool to have in your arsenal. The grinder can also be used to sharpen other power tools in your kit.
When choosing a grinder for you needs, consider whether you will be using it for precision work or heavier use. The bigger and heavier the job, the larger the disc size and motor power you will need. If you will be cutting cement, for example, purchase a model with at least 5 – 9 amps.
To a certain extent, you can customise your angle grinder for the job ahead with the right wheel. A wire brush is excellent for stripping paint from a large flat surface and for the tight corners, switch to a wire brush attachment/ disc. If you need to remove mortar between bricks without damaging them, a thick tuckpointing wheel (a diamond wheel) is recommended. You will be glad you did not attempt this job with a hammer and chisel. Not all grinders work with all types of discs, so it pays to research the type of discs best suited for your upcoming projects before buying a grinder.
Look for a tool with an adjustable, protective guard to direct any sparks or ground material away from you. A dust ejection system is also desirable for the long life of you grinder, and yourself. The grinder bearings and motor should be dust sealed as well. Anti-vibration features are nice to have as well since they provide better control and keep your arms from tiring quickly.
Try the item or read up on reviews to see what other owners and tradesmen are saying about the grinder you are considering. Since this is a power tool to be used for tough jobs, make sure the comments include information about the sturdiness of the model. It should be heavily constructed but designed so that it is easy to hold in hand and use.
Keep in mind features that will make your household jobs easier when using the grinder such as the convenience of a long power cord or a rechargeable model with no cord needed. Take notice of the recharge time necessary if purchasing a rechargeable model. An adjustable side handle will help keep your grinder under control allowing two-handed operation and make your tasks much easier. A rugged storage case is also suggested to keep your tool in excellent condition.
Safety is also important so look for a lock-off switch. Grinders should of course be stored out of reach of children. Finally, be sure to wear a facial shield when using the grinder and even a breathing mask if your project will create concrete dust.
