For almost any construction project around the home or on the job site, a cordless drill is one of the best tools to have in your toolbox.
Since its inception, this versatile tool has seen many changes in design. These have resulted in one of the best power tools to carry in a toolbox. For portability and drilling holes easily, this device can't be beat.
The origins of the electric drill date back to 1889, when inventor Arthur Janot made the first patent. He is universally credited with making this product. While the drill was not a new invention by any stretch, having one that used electric power made many tasks much more efficient. Surprisingly, the first cordless model was produced only six years later by Wilhelm Fein.
This tool can bore small or large holes in a variety of materials by two distinct motions: rotation and hammering of the drill bit into the material. Most users employ their drill for either driving screws or joining two piece of material together with screws. It is just a matter of changing the drill/bit.
The most popular type of drilling machine uses an on/off switch and a drill bit with a single speed. There are a full range of models currently being offered on the market. Most of the cordless drills are placed into one of two types: lightweight (for projects around the house) and heavy duty (for commercial usage).
Many different brands have become available in a wide variety of sizes and styles that are likely to fit almost any situation. Each manufacturer has put some of the most unique innovations into their models to improve the performance and versatility. One such item is a laser guide that can be used to see exactly where the hole will be drilled. There are also cordless chucks to make removing drill bits easier without the need for a key.
Typically a more expensive model will offer more features and is likely to also include the very latest technology. There are some considerations that need to be followed for anybody who is attempting to purchase one of these power tools for their own use.
The first is battery selection, as these items have come a long way from the initial offering and now come in one of two models: Ni-Cad or Lithium Ion. The former will typically cost less and usually come with the models intended for household use. Lithium Ion batteries are heavier and are a part of the commercial package. At least 2 batteries should come with the cordless drill kit since one can be used while the other is in the charging stand.
Another item that should be looked at is how comfortable the tool is when it is being used. This ergonomic styling can mean the difference between completing a job quickly or having to rest due to fatigue. All machines will also need some maintenance, but some of these are easier than others. The manufacturer should include some guidelines to this fact.
Cordless drills are become more popular due to their ease of use, increased efficiency and long run life. These things alone account for the increased sales among homeowners and building professionals.
