Many times people have discovered that the dream home they bought or built does not have enough space to fit a growing family. Sometimes all it takes is a look up, and the solution lies above our heads. Attic or loft space is the perfect answer to an extra room or more storage space.
Now comes the question; how do we access all that extra space? Pulling out the step ladder and cutting a hole in the ceiling is not the best answer. Sounds like a good idea when your desperate, but will not work in the long run. Besides the lady of the house will object strongly to having a gaping hole in her ceiling. No, we need an installed ladder. As long as the ceiling is capable of weight bearing and the joist run parallel to the area the ladder will be installed in, then it will be okay to begin the search for the perfect one to suit the needs of the home owner.
Those ladder kits available at most home improvement stores are serviceable, and work for most people. Your not most people, and want something a bit more upscale. After taking the time to make your home a reflection of your taste, and desires, you do not want the mundane. Custom built ladders are available and will allow for a more unique look in your home.
These ladders can be made of several different materials, and in any style you choose. Traditionalist will love the look of the timber loft ladder. They can be stained to match the decor of your home, and they are very quiet when being raised or lowered. They can be placed so that they are nearly invisible when not in use. These wooden ladders are traditionally made from yellow pine, but the high end ones can be made from any hard wood. Hard wood is the best choice if you wish to avoid the problem that pine has of tending to warp in damp weather.
Another ladder choice is for the concertina ladder. Those with extremely high ceilings will appreciate these. They can be built to fit any length needed, and can be motorized for easy use. Usually made from aluminum, they are very light weight and durable.
Fire safety is also an issue in any home. All ladder kits come with fire safe doors, but custom ladders can be reinforced with even higher fire guards and thermo shields. If by chance you live in an area that floods, sometimes the option is needed to get to higher levels in your home.
Make use of all the space your attic has, and do it with style and safety in mind.
